Panic not. From today Londoners will be able to juice-up their phones in the back of more than 500 black cabs. Vodafone has kitted out the cabs with chargers as part of a £1m advertising campaign touting the improvements it has made to its mobile coverage in London. Guy Laurence, chief executive of Vodafone UK, said: “We are committed to offering London the best possible network.”

He said Vodafone had made “hundreds of improvements” to increase capacity and reliability of its London network, which had been straining under the pressure of consumers growing love of smartphones, such as the iPhone and BlackBerrys.

Vodafone customers will also be able to pay for their taxi journeys with their phone, rather than forcing the cabbie to detour to the nearest cash point.

And next week, Vodafone will begin sponsoring a fleet of Heathrow Express trains.

Both initiatives are part of a £10m advertising campaign by the mobile phone group.
